Individual Therapy

Clients come to therapy for many reasons.

For someone to take at least an hour a week out of an already busy life to see me; there is something out of balance, some pain. When you are in pain, what is needed is someone trustworthy who understands that pain.

Trust is the most important part of the therapist/client relationship. I continue to feel honored by clients who come through my door and tell me the most intimate details of their lives.

My clients tell me that it’s important to have someone look at them, make eye contact, and really listen to them. I haven’t personally gone through every experience that my clients have, but I am able to put myself in the place where they are and hear from them what it feels like. It’s important to have someone who can go into painful experiences with you. You can use their strength while finding your own.

What Brings People to Individual Therapy?

Relationships
It’s therapy for one; but it’s about relationships. Clients come to improve their ability to form close relationships. It can be romantic relationships; it is also work and non-romantic relationships. As our world becomes more remote–more on-line–there is a strong need to connect in a deeper way and have more satisfying friendships.

Feelings
Many clients walk through the door looking for help with very strong feelings that aren’t serving them well. Feeling ignored and unimportant causes us to escalate and lash out in anger. Behind the anger is frustration and fear.

Unproductive Patterns
Clients come to therapy for motivation to make the changes that are needed. They know that they are stuck in a loop. They keep repeating the same patterns that produce results that they don’t want. They continue to choose partners who are emotionally unavailable; it’s a different person but distant and cold. They can’t seem to break the cycle.

In therapy, we will look at the patterns and identify what is preventing change. I can offer you guidance, a fresh perspective, motivation, and accountability
