EMDR

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an intervention originally used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It can be used to treat traumatic events such as accidents and physical assault, but it can also be used to treat events not usually associated with PTSD; such as memories that can cause low self-esteem.

When someone is hurt physically, the body heals itself unless there is something that blocks it. It’s the same way with the mind. The mind can heal emotional hurts unless there is something blocking the healing.

EMDR helps to remove the block that prevents healing and the client can achieve healing several months, or even years, after the event.

What other conditions can EMDR treat?

EMDR research has established that it is effective for Post-traumatic stress however, therapists have had success using EMDR in treating the following:

  • Complicated grief
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Pain
  • Physical abuse
